Book Review: An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen

Book Summary:

Looking to earn some easy cash, Jessica Farris agrees to be a test subject in a psychological study about ethics and morality. But as the study moves from the exam room to the real world, the line between what is real and what is one of Dr. Shields’s experiments blurs.

Dr. Shields seems to know what Jess is thinking… and what she’s hiding.

Jessica’s behavior will not only be monitored but manipulated.

Caught in a web of attraction, deceit, and jealousy, Jess quickly learns that some obsessions can be deadly.

What I like about the book:

  • The book is well written. I love that the story was narrated in alternating POVs and that the authors used different writing styles for the two main voices. Lydia and Jess are two solid protagonists because of the authors’ creative characterizations.
  • It lived up to its psychological thriller tag. The twists and turns grabbed my full attention.
  • Lydia made me call my mom (Lol). That woman can get inside your mind.
  • Which brings me back again to how great these female characters are. Lydia and Jess are two smart, independent, and capable women who stood up for their principles regardless of the consequences (granted, the former’s ways were a bit unorthodox but still).
  • The book raised good ethical and philosophical questions. It also addressed consent, sexual harassment, and psychological abuse in relationships.

What I don’t like about the book:

  • I felt that the first few chapters were dragging. They could omit some of those pages and the story would still stand.
  • I’m still debating if I liked the ending or not. I guess I was expecting a big finale but I respect that the authors chose the most ‘Lydia way’ of ending things.

Rating: 7/10
